Description

Product Description

When Vladimir Putin first took power in 1999, he was a little-known figure ruling a country that was reeling from a decade and a half of crisis. In the years since, he has reestablished Russia as a great power. How did he do it? What principles have guided Putin''s economic policies? What patterns can be discerned? In this new analysis of Putin''s Russia, Chris Miller examines its economic policy and the tools Russia''s elite have used to achieve its goals. Miller argues that despite Russia''s corruption, cronyism, and overdependence on oil as an economic driver, Putin''s economic strategy has been surprisingly successful.

Explaining the economic policies that underwrote Putin''s two-decades-long rule, Miller shows how, at every juncture, Putinomics has served Putin''s needs by guaranteeing economic stability and supporting his accumulation of power. Even in the face of Western financial sanctions and low oil prices, Putin has never been more relevant on the world stage.

By far the best scholarly book on Putin''s economic and financial accomplishments. Unlike most books on Putin''s regime, this one is objective giving credit and blame to Putin where due.

I love Chris Miller’s other book (The Struggle to save the Soviet economy) so much that I find this good book slightly disappointing. Nevertheless, it is a very good book and I’ve leaned two things: (1) why the cost base is so high in Russia (populist salary and pension growth), and (2) Russia is a bit stretched economically given its commitment to too many things internationally and its many factories are in far-flung locations.

Miller does it again. In Putinomics, Miller clearly and concisely explains the underpinnings of Russian economic policy over the past two decades. For the expert, Miller puts forth a novel argument in this careful, analytic account of Putin''s policies and how they shaped the rise of the Russian economy; for the lay reader, he simplifies complex economic concepts in this accessible work. A must-read in our current political environment. Bravo!

Chris Miller helps makes sense of the Russian motives of acting the way they do through its leader? Thorough through out and connects the dots of who is who and how policy decisions are decided. We need another book on the man himself.
